Down to Earth with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines

Unica is grounded in an abundant love for Mother Nature – from the way we approach design to the production methods we practice, we keep the earth close to heart. That’s why we’ve partnered up with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, one of our country’s leading organizations for nature conservation. Through this, we aim to promote sustainable and responsible fashion for a healthy planet.

Our partnership takes shape in the Down to Earth campaign, a tribute to Philippine biodiversity and a reminder of the importance in conserving it. Our country is incredibly blessed with natural wonders – from abundant flora to diverse fauna – all of which serve a purpose in our harmonious ecosystem.

For Down to Earth, we’re highlighting a particularly vibrant part of our ecosystem – Philippine crops. To say that agriculture is important to our country is an understatement – according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, it is estimated that 40% of the Filipino workforce is in this field. This makes the importance of nature preservation crystal-clear – we must take care of local crops because our lives are so closely intertwined with it.

We are shining a light onto three Philippine crops that are central to our agriculture – maize, sugarcane, and coconut. Aside from the role they play in the economy, they can be considered as important parts of our country’s Identity. Let’s take coconut as an example – a plant that’s synonymous with the Philippine’s tropical climate, coconut is found in many cultural recipes that have been passed down for generations. Although it’s a humble crop, it holds an immeasurable value so significant to our culture. The same goes for maize (which is just second to rice as the country’s most important crop), and sugarcane.

For Down to Earth, we are creating an exclusive collection with special artworks, prints, and other designs inspired by local crops. The clothes will artistically reflect the wonders of Philippine biodiversity, and will speak to the sense of hope, excitement, and optimism that we hold for the future of our country’s environment
